Relationship between Compliance, Family Support and Self-esteem in Type II Diabetes Mellitus Patients

Abstract
This study was designed to provde the basic data of effective nursing intervention for elevated compliance of type II diabetes mellitus patients by examining their compliance, and its relationship to family support and self-esteem. The variables
which
might affect compliance in these patients were analyzed for this study.
The subjects of this study were a total of 200 type II diabetes mellitus patients at the out-patient departments, Kang Nam St. Mary's Hospital and St. mary' s Hospital in Seoul.
Data were collected by using a questionnaire from June 5,1991 to July 27, 1991. Data were collected by using a SAS program for ANOVA, t-test, Scheffe test, Pearson correlation coefficients and stepwise multiple regression analysis.
@ES The results were as follows;
@EN 1. A positive correlation was observed between compliance of patients and family support(r=.29 P=.00), However, there was no stratistically significant correlation between compliance of patients and self-esteem(r=.13, P=.07).
2. Compliance scores in relation with demographic characteristics showed no statistical discrepancy.
3. The scores of family support were significantly higher in males than in females(t=2.77, P=.00). The married group and occupation group showed significantly higher scores of family support than those of family support in singles group and
jobless
group(t=3.52, P=.00; t=3.38, P=.00).
4. Scores of self-esteem were siginificantly higher in males and in occupation group than in females and in jobless group(t=4.82, P=.00; t=5.89, P=.00).
5. Family support, occupation, age, educational level were the factors closely associated with compliance.
It can therefore be concluded from the above that compliance of Type II diabetes mellitus patients is positively correlated with family support.
